Hyundai Ioniq P Could Be the Brand’s Most Affordable Electric SUV in India – Launch Expected in January 2027

Hyundai's upcoming made-in-India compact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, is expected to adopt the Ioniq P name. The new EV will sit below the Creta Electric and compete with the Tata Nexon EV and other compact electric SUVs.
Hyundai Motor Company is preparing to strengthen its presence in India's rapidly expanding electric passenger vehicle market with a new, locally developed compact electric SUV. Internally known as HE1i, the upcoming model is now expected to be introduced under the Hyundai Ioniq P name.
The potential name emerged during Hyundai Motor Company's third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call on October 29, when management referred to the Ioniq P as an upcoming product for India following the recently introduced Bayon.
While Hyundai Motor India has not officially confirmed the production name or explicitly linked Ioniq P with the HE1i project, the development indicates that the Korean automaker could extend its globally recognised Ioniq electric vehicle family into India's more affordable SUV segment.
The upcoming EV is expected to make its debut in January 2027, with a commercial launch anticipated during the final quarter of FY2026-27.

Hyundai Ioniq P: A New Entry Point to the Ioniq Family
Hyundai's Ioniq brand has traditionally been associated with technologically advanced electric vehicles such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in international markets.
The introduction of an affordable Ioniq-branded SUV specifically for India could mark an important change in the company's electric vehicle strategy.
Unlike the larger and more premium Ioniq models, the upcoming HE1i has been developed with Indian buyers, pricing sensitivity and localisation requirements in mind.
The new model will be positioned below the Creta Electric, enabling Hyundai to address customers considering a compact electric SUV for everyday urban and highway use.
From a portfolio perspective, the Ioniq P could provide Hyundai with a stronger presence across multiple EV price segments rather than relying primarily on its existing electric offerings.
Design: Boxy SUV Styling Revealed Through Spy Shots

Recent spy photographs of the HE1i suggest a relatively upright and boxy silhouette, which could help maximise interior space within compact exterior dimensions.
The camouflaged test vehicles reveal several noteworthy design characteristics:
Upright SUV proportions with a tall roofline
Relatively flat bonnet and squared-off body profile
Large alloy wheels with distinctive geometric styling
High-set lighting elements and a substantial front bumper
Compact overall footprint with a spacious-looking passenger cabin
The production vehicle is likely to feature Hyundai's latest EV design language, potentially incorporating modern LED lighting signatures and clean body surfaces.
However, the final headlamp arrangement, exterior dimensions and production styling remain unconfirmed.
Dedicated EV Platform and Two Battery Options
The Hyundai Ioniq P is expected to use the E-GMP (K) architecture, which also underpins the international Hyundai Inster electric SUV.
Unlike an electric vehicle derived from an existing petrol-powered platform, a dedicated EV architecture allows engineers greater flexibility in packaging the battery, electric drivetrain and passenger compartment.
Hyundai is expected to offer two configurations:
Standard Range: Targeted at customers prioritising affordability and daily commuting.
Long Range: Intended for buyers seeking greater driving flexibility and intercity usability.
For reference, the international Hyundai Inster offers 42 kWh and 49 kWh battery options, with a maximum claimed WLTP range of approximately 355 km.
These specifications should not be interpreted as confirmed figures for the India-specific Ioniq P. Hyundai has not announced its battery capacities, certified driving range, charging speeds or motor output.
Technology: Level 2 ADAS and New Infotainment
Hyundai has already confirmed that its upcoming compact electric SUV will feature a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 advanced driver-assistance technology.
The infotainment system could potentially incorporate Hyundai's new Pleos Connect architecture, although the company has not confirmed its deployment in the India-specific model.
Level 2 ADAS could include features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and automated emergency braking, depending on the final equipment specification.
This technology package would help Hyundai differentiate its upcoming EV in a segment where connected features, safety equipment and digital interfaces are increasingly important purchase considerations.
Battery Localisation Will Be Critical to Pricing
One of the most important aspects of the HE1i programme is Hyundai's localisation strategy. The upcoming electric SUV will initially rely on imported battery cells, with Hyundai planning to introduce locally produced cells at a later stage through its association with Exide Industries.
Delays in the domestic battery-cell programme have affected the original sourcing timeline, making imported cells necessary for the initial phase.
Hyundai also plans to progressively increase localisation across its Indian operations, with a longer-term target of approximately 92% local content, compared with around 81% currently.
Greater localisation could eventually support more competitive pricing, lower exposure to currency fluctuations and improved cost efficiency as production volumes increase.
Expected Price and Competition
Although official prices have not been announced, the Ioniq P's positioning below the Creta Electric suggests that Hyundai will target India's increasingly competitive mass-market electric SUV segment.
Market estimates currently suggest a possible starting price in the region of ₹12 lakh, with higher variants potentially extending towards ₹17–18 lakh. These are indicative estimates rather than Hyundai-announced prices.
The upcoming model is expected to compete with:
Tata Nexon EV
Mahindra XUV 3XO EV
Kia Syros EV
Hyundai will need to strike the right balance between battery range, real-world efficiency, cabin space, technology and pricing to establish a meaningful presence in this category.
Launch Timeline: January 2027 Expected
Hyundai has confirmed that its new mass-market EV is scheduled for introduction in Q4 FY2026-27, corresponding to January–March 2027.Recent reports point towards a possible January 2027 debut, although Hyundai has yet to announce a specific unveiling date.
The vehicle will be manufactured at the company's Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu, which remains a major production hub for Hyundai's Indian operations. The HE1i is part of Hyundai's broader India product strategy, which includes investment in local manufacturing, new vehicle platforms and greater adoption of electrification.
Why the Ioniq P Matters for Hyundai India
India's electric passenger vehicle market is experiencing significant growth, supported by expanding model availability and increasing consumer acceptance.
However, Hyundai's electric vehicle portfolio has so far had limited coverage of the more affordable end of the market.
The Ioniq P could help address this gap by offering a purpose-developed electric SUV aimed at a significantly wider customer base. Hyundai management has indicated that the company wants its EV penetration to move closer to the overall industry average in FY2027-28.
A competitively priced, locally manufactured electric SUV could therefore become central to Hyundai's volume ambitions rather than serving merely as an additional niche offering.

Auto Punditz Take
The Hyundai Ioniq P could be one of the company's most strategically important launches in India in 2027.
Its significance goes beyond introducing another electric SUV. Hyundai has an opportunity to combine its established dealership network, brand familiarity, manufacturing scale and modern EV architecture into a product designed specifically for Indian buyers.
The upright SUV styling suggested by spy shots could also appeal to customers who prioritise practicality and cabin space over conventional crossover design.
Nevertheless, the ultimate success of the Ioniq P will depend on three critical factors: competitive pricing, usable real-world driving range and a well-differentiated feature package.
With Tata, Mahindra and Kia competing in the compact electric SUV space, Hyundai will face a demanding market from the outset. If Hyundai manages to deliver strong localisation alongside attractive battery and technology options, the Ioniq P could become an important volume driver for the brand's electric vehicle business in India.
