Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Haryana Dominate India’s Auto Component Manufacturing GVA

India’s auto component manufacturing base remains highly concentrated in a few industrially advanced states, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana together contributing nearly 68% of the country’s Gross Value Added from the manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles.

As per the Annual Survey of Industries 2023-24 by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, NIC 293 covers the manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles. GVA represents the additional value created during production and is calculated by deducting input value from output value. (Press Information Bureau)

India’s Auto Parts Manufacturing GVA Crosses ₹1.13 Lakh Crore

India’s GVA from the manufacture of auto parts and accessories stood at ₹1,13,358.77 crore in 2023-24. This segment is a crucial part of the automotive value chain, supporting passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, tractors and export-oriented component supply.

The data highlights how India’s component manufacturing ecosystem is strongly aligned with established vehicle production hubs. States with large OEM presence, supplier clusters, ports, skilled labour availability and strong ancillary networks continue to dominate the value creation map.

Maharashtra Leads India’s Auto Component Value Chain

Maharashtra topped the list with ₹27,699.81 crore, accounting for 24.44% of India’s total GVA from auto parts and accessories manufacturing. The state’s leadership is supported by strong automotive and engineering clusters around Pune, Chakan, Nashik, Aurangabad and Mumbai-Pune industrial corridors.

Maharashtra’s ecosystem benefits from a wide mix of passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle, two-wheeler, EV and precision engineering suppliers. Its strong logistics network and proximity to ports also support domestic and export-oriented manufacturing.

Tamil Nadu Remains a Close Second

Tamil Nadu ranked second with ₹26,761.23 crore, contributing 23.61% to India’s total GVA in this category. The state remains one of India’s most mature automotive manufacturing hubs, backed by the Chennai-Sriperumbudur-Oragadam-Hosur belt.

Tamil Nadu’s strength comes from its deep supplier base, export readiness, strong OEM footprint and presence across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, tyres, electronics and EV-related component manufacturing.

Haryana Holds Third Position

Haryana ranked third with ₹22,283.53 crore, contributing 19.66% of India’s total. The state’s performance is closely linked to the Gurugram-Manesar-Bawal automotive belt, which has historically been one of India’s strongest passenger vehicle and component manufacturing clusters.

Haryana’s high share reflects its concentration of established Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers, proximity to the National Capital Region, and strong integration with vehicle manufacturing operations.

The Top 3 States Control Nearly Two-Thirds of the Sector

The most striking takeaway is the high concentration of value creation. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana together account for 67.71% of India’s GVA from auto parts and accessories manufacturing.

This shows that India’s auto component economy is still led by a few dense manufacturing clusters rather than being evenly distributed across the country. These three states have built decades of advantage through OEM presence, vendor ecosystems, skilled manpower, testing facilities, logistics and industrial policy support.

Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka Form the Next Layer

Uttar Pradesh ranked fourth with ₹5,997.02 crore, while Rajasthan followed closely with ₹5,832.75 crore. Karnataka stood sixth with ₹5,366.80 crore.

These states are emerging as important secondary hubs. Uttar Pradesh benefits from NCR-linked industrial zones and growing manufacturing investments, Rajasthan has a strong auto and component base around Neemrana and Bhiwadi, while Karnataka has a mix of automotive, engineering and EV ecosystem strengths.

Gujarat’s Rank Looks Lower Than Its Overall Manufacturing Strength

Gujarat ranked eighth in this specific category with ₹3,810.26 crore, or 3.36% share. While Gujarat is one of India’s leading manufacturing states overall, the ASI data shows that in NIC 293 auto parts and accessories, its share is much lower than Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana.

This indicates that Gujarat’s broader industrial strength may be more diversified across chemicals, metals, textiles, pharmaceuticals and other manufacturing segments, while auto component GVA remains more concentrated in older automotive clusters.

What This Means for India’s Auto Industry

The data clearly shows that India’s auto component manufacturing strength is cluster-driven. States that host large OEMs and long-established supplier networks continue to capture the bulk of value addition.

For the next phase of growth, EV components, electronics, battery systems, power electronics, lightweighting, advanced safety systems and export-oriented precision parts will become key. States that can attract these newer value chains may move up the ranking in the coming years.

For now, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana remain the undisputed leaders of India’s auto parts and accessories manufacturing economy.
