India’s passenger vehicle market posted healthy year-on-year growth in August 2026, with Vahan registration data indicating total registrations of 3,96,269 units, up 16.0% from 3,41,695 units recorded in August 2025.
The sequential picture, however, was softer. Industry registrations declined 5.8% month-on-month from 4,20,885 units in July 2026, suggesting that while retail demand remained substantially higher than last year, August saw some moderation compared with the preceding month.
Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably ahead of the market with more than 1.65 lakh registrations, while Tata Motors strengthened its second-place position and registered the highest market-share gain among the major manufacturers. Mahindra retained third position ahead of Hyundai.

August 2026 : Key Takeaways
Three trends stand out from the August registration numbers:
First, the market remains structurally strong year-on-year. Total registrations were 16% higher than August 2025 despite a sequential decline.
Second, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors gained substantial share. Maruti's market share increased by 2.3 percentage points, and Tata gained 2.5 points.
Third, market concentration remains high. Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, and Hyundai accounted for 80.7% of registrations. Adding Toyota and Kia, the top six manufacturers controlled 92.9% of the market, leaving less than 8% for other manufacturers.
August 2026's Vahan data contrasts with the previous year: the market is larger, but momentum has moderated compared to July.
Maruti Suzuki grew 22.8% while the market grew 16%, maintaining a share above 41%. Tata's 40.6% YoY growth and 14.3% market share strengthened its No. 2 position. However, Mahindra's 14.2% and Toyota's 19.5% sequential declines show significant individual manufacturer shifts.
Among newer brands, VinFast's 2,199 registrations and 43.5% sequential increase highlight its potential growth in India.
The upcoming festive season will be crucial. September and October trends will indicate if August's moderation was temporary or suggests a broader cooling in demand.
