Electric Car Sales May 2026: Tata Leads With 39% Share, Mahindra Crosses 7,000 Units As Market Grows 8% MoM

India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded a healthy sequential recovery in May 2026, with total electric car sales rising to 26,620 units. This marked an 8.2% month-on-month growth over 24,592 units sold in April 2026, indicating improved traction after a mixed performance in the previous month.
The market remained highly concentrated among the top three players, with Tata, Mahindra & Mahindra, and MG together accounting for over 82% of total electric car sales in May 2026. While Tata retained its leadership, Mahindra continued to strengthen its position in the premium EV space, and MG remained a strong third player despite a decline in Windsor volumes.

Tata Motors continued to lead India’s electric car market in May 2026 with 10,377 units, up from 9,041 units in April 2026. This translated into a 14.8% month-on-month growth and gave Tata a commanding 39% market share.
Punch EV was the brand’s highest-selling electric model with 3,681 units, registering a 14% MoM growth. The Nexon EV followed with 2,649 units, growing 6% MoM.
Harrier EV also contributed significantly with 1,833 units, up 8% MoM, while the Curvv EV saw a sharp improvement to 1,288 units, growing 46% over April. The Tiago EV rose 53% MoM to 740 units, while the Tigor EV declined 28% to 186 units.
Tata’s strength continues to come from its multi-product EV portfolio, spanning hatchbacks, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and fleet-oriented models.
Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the second-largest EV carmaker in May 2026 with 7,031 units, up from 6,386 units in April. The brand posted a 10.1% MoM growth and captured 26.4% market share.
The newly introduced Mahindra 9S was the brand’s biggest contributor, with 3,502 units sold in May 2026. It also became the second-highest-selling electric car in India for the month. The XEV 9e followed with 1,939 units, growing 20% MoM from 1,611 units in April.
BE6, however, saw volumes decline by 23% MoM to 902 units, while the XUV3XO EV recorded strong growth of 88%, rising to 559 units. The older XUV400 also improved to 129 units, up 95% MoM.
MG Motor India ranked third in May 2026 with 4,463 units, compared to 4,614 units in April. This resulted in a 3.3% MoM decline, but MG still held a strong 16.8% market share.
MG Windsor remained the brand’s top-selling EV with 2,032 units, but volumes fell sharply by 38% MoM from 3,296 units in April.
VinFast recorded 2,359 units in May 2026, growing 37.6% MoM from 1,714 units in April. The brand captured 8.9% market share, making it the fourth-largest EV carmaker in India for the month.
VinFast Limo Green was the brand’s best-selling model with 1,026 units, registering 50% MoM growth.
Maruti Suzuki sold 1,439 units of the eVitara in May 2026, down from 2,006 units in April. This represented a 28.3% MoM decline, bringing Maruti’s EV market share to 5.4%.
Kia sold 569 electric cars in May 2026, compared to 279 units in April, registering a sharp 103.9% MoM growth. The company’s entire May EV volume came from the Carens Clavis EV, which also grew 104% MoM.
Hyundai recorded 305 EV sales in May 2026, down from 539 units in April, resulting in a 43.4% MoM decline. Its market share stood at 1.1%.
Creta EV contributed 295 units, down 43% MoM, while the Ioniq 5 managed only 10 units, falling 50% from April.
Toyota entered the May 2026 EV chart with 45 units of the Ebella, giving it a 0.2% market share. Citroen sold 32 units of the eC3, up from 13 units in April, recording 146.2% MoM growth, although its overall share remained just 0.1%.

The MG Windsor led the model-wise EV sales chart with 2,032 units, despite a steep 38% MoM decline. The Mahindra 9S followed closely with 3,502 units, while the Tata Punch EV stood third with 3,681 units.

May 2026 was a positive month for India’s electric passenger vehicle industry, with overall sales improving by more than 2,000 units over April. The market is increasingly moving beyond early hatchback-led EV adoption and is now being shaped by compact SUVs, midsize SUVs, premium electric SUVs and fleet-focused electric MPVs.
Tata continues to enjoy the advantage of scale and product depth, while Mahindra is quickly emerging as the strongest challenger in the higher-end electric SUV space. MG remains a key player, but the performance of Windsor in the coming months will be crucial. Meanwhile, VinFast’s fast growth adds another competitive layer to India’s evolving EV market.
