Mahindra Vision S Spied in Bengaluru Ahead of Debut – Production-Ready SUV Gets ADAS, Rear Spare Wheel

Mahindra is accelerating road testing of its upcoming Vision S SUV, with a heavily camouflaged prototype now spotted on the streets of Bengaluru. The latest test mule appears to be moving closer to production specification, revealing several important details including production-style lighting, ADAS hardware and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
The Vision S is particularly significant because it previews one of the first production SUVs to emerge from Mahindra’s new-generation NU_IQ architecture, which will form the backbone of multiple upcoming Mahindra SUVs. Mahindra officially introduced the Vision S concept alongside the Vision T, Vision SXT and Vision X in August 2025. The company has confirmed that SUVs based on the NU_IQ architecture will start entering production from 2027.

Latest Mahindra Vision S Spy Shots Reveal Production Details
The latest prototype spotted testing in Bengaluru continues to wear extensive camouflage, but several production-oriented components are now visible. The front end gets a tall and upright stance, giving the Vision S a distinctly traditional SUV character rather than the crossover-inspired proportions seen on several compact SUVs.
Production-style headlamps and LED DRLs can now be seen on the prototype. A radar module appears to be positioned centrally within the front grille area, strongly indicating that the production model will be equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System. The lower bumper also gets a sizeable central air intake, while vertically arranged lighting elements can be seen towards the corners.
Tailgate-Mounted Spare Wheel Gives Vision S Rugged Character
One of the Vision S's most distinctive elements is visible at the rear. Mahindra has retained a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, helping give the upcoming SUV a more rugged identity. The test vehicle has been spotted running a 235/60 R18 spare tyre, suggesting that 18-inch wheels could be offered on higher variants.
The squared-off tailgate, upright rear windscreen and chunky bumper further reinforce the SUV's boxy character. Temporary vertically stacked rear lamps continue to appear on test vehicles, suggesting Mahindra may still be concealing the final production taillamp design.
Could This Become a Compact Scorpio?
The Vision S concept has generated considerable interest because of its upright proportions and styling cues reminiscent of Mahindra's Scorpio family. There has consequently been speculation that Mahindra could eventually position the production model as a more compact member of the Scorpio family.
Names such as Scorpio S or Scorpio Sport have been speculated in reports, although Mahindra has not officially confirmed the production name. What appears increasingly clear is that the Vision S is being developed as a more rugged SUV offering rather than simply another urban crossover. If positioned below the Scorpio-N while sitting above or alongside the XUV 3XO, it could allow Mahindra to target customers looking for traditional SUV styling within a smaller footprint.
Mahindra Vision S Interior – What Spy Shots Have Revealed
Previous test vehicles have already provided an early look at the cabin.

Most of these features have not yet been formally announced by Mahindra for the production Vision S, although recent prototypes point towards a considerably more technology-focused cabin than traditional compact SUVs.
NU_IQ Platform Is the Big Story
Underneath the Vision S will be Mahindra's new NU_IQ modular architecture.
Unlike a platform developed around only one type of propulsion system, NU_IQ has been engineered as a multi-energy architecture. Mahindra has officially confirmed that the platform supports multiple body styles and powertrain configurations while also accommodating front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layouts, right-hand drive and left-hand drive vehicles.
This flexibility should allow Mahindra to develop internal combustion, electrified and potentially fully electric derivatives using the same underlying architecture. Another important engineering highlight is the platform's flat-floor construction. Mahindra says NU_IQ enables a flat-floor layout even for ICE-powered SUVs while targeting improved cabin space, boot capacity, driving dynamics and safety.
Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid and EV Possibilities
Given the flexibility of NU_IQ, the Vision S could eventually support multiple propulsion technologies. The initial production version is expected to focus on conventional petrol and diesel engines, potentially paired with manual and automatic transmissions.
Hybrid and fully electric derivatives could subsequently follow depending on Mahindra's market strategy. However, Mahindra has yet to officially disclose engine specifications, battery capacities or transmission combinations for the production Vision S.
Independent Rear Suspension Could Be a Major Highlight
Another interesting detail emerging from prototypes is the apparent use of independent rear suspension. If retained on the production version, it would be relatively unusual in the compact SUV segment and could provide Mahindra with an important differentiator in terms of ride comfort and handling.
The NU_IQ platform itself has been designed around what Mahindra describes as command seating combined with superior driving dynamics, suggesting chassis development will be an important part of the upcoming SUV's positioning.
Mahindra Vision S Launch Timeline
Reports surrounding the latest prototype suggest Mahindra could showcase a more production-ready version of the Vision S around its Independence Day programme in August 2026.
However, Mahindra's original official announcement stated that production vehicles based on the NU_IQ family would begin arriving from 2027. Therefore, an August reveal should not necessarily be interpreted as the start of customer deliveries. A commercial launch could take place later, depending on Mahindra's final production schedule.
Where Will the Vision S Sit in Mahindra's Line-Up?
Mahindra already has the XUV 3XO covering the mainstream compact SUV segment.
The Vision S appears to be taking a different approach. Instead of directly duplicating the 3XO's urban crossover positioning, Mahindra could use the Vision S to offer buyers:
XUV 3XO: Urban, feature-rich compact crossover
Vision S: Rugged, upright lifestyle-oriented compact SUV
Scorpio-N: Larger body-on-frame SUV
Thar: Dedicated lifestyle/off-road SUV
Such positioning could allow Mahindra to enter another high-volume SUV niche without necessarily cannibalising its existing products heavily.

The latest Vision S prototypes indicate that Mahindra is taking the concept considerably closer to production while retaining the elements that made it distinctive in the first place.
The upright styling, rear-mounted spare wheel and apparent focus on SUV-like proportions should help distinguish it from the growing number of similarly styled compact crossovers. More importantly, the Vision S will provide one of the first real tests of Mahindra's NU_IQ strategy.
With the architecture capable of supporting multiple propulsion systems, drivetrain layouts and global markets, Mahindra is effectively creating a platform that could eventually spawn an entire family of SUVs.
If the production Vision S combines this flexibility with competitive pricing, modern technology, ADAS and Mahindra's established SUV brand equity, it could become another important product in the company's rapidly expanding portfolio.
