Made-in-India Maruti Suzuki e Vitara reaches nearly 50 international markets, with Europe emerging as the largest export destination. Gujarat's Hansalpur manufacturing facility strengthens India's position in the global electric vehicle supply chain.

Maruti Suzuki India has achieved a significant milestone in its electric vehicle journey, surpassing 50,000 cumulative EV exports since commencing international shipments in August 2025. The achievement comes in less than 15 months and highlights the company's growing presence in global electric passenger vehicle markets.

The automaker has also established itself as India's leading exporter of electric passenger vehicles, accounting for approximately 93% of India's electric passenger vehicle exports during April–September 2026 (H1 FY2027), according to SIAM data cited by the company.

The export performance is primarily driven by the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, the manufacturer's first globally marketed battery-electric SUV, which is produced at its Hansalpur facility in Gujarat.

Maruti Suzuki EV Exports: Key Highlights

Europe Leads Maruti Suzuki's Global EV Export Expansion

Europe has emerged as the largest overseas destination for Maruti Suzuki's electric vehicles, reflecting the company's strategy of using India as a manufacturing base for international markets.

The Made-in-India e Vitara is exported to nearly 50 countries, including:

  • United Kingdom

  • Germany

  • Norway

  • Switzerland

  • Japan

The e Vitara was developed as a global electric vehicle, with production planned to serve more than 100 countries. Its existing reach of nearly 50 markets demonstrates the scale of the international rollout.

Europe is particularly important because its established electric vehicle market provides Maruti Suzuki with an opportunity to compete in a segment where battery-electric models already have a substantial presence.

The export milestone also demonstrates Suzuki's ability to manufacture EVs in India for markets with demanding safety, quality and regulatory requirements.

Hansalpur Becomes a Strategic Global EV Manufacturing Hub

Maruti Suzuki's Hansalpur manufacturing facility in Gujarat is central to the company's electric vehicle export operations. The facility began producing the e Vitara in August 2025 and serves as the exclusive manufacturing base for Suzuki's first global battery-electric vehicle.

The company has significantly expanded the plant's manufacturing capabilities, making it the first Suzuki production location globally to achieve an annual capacity of 10 lakh vehicles at a single site.

Importantly, the 10-lakh-unit capacity represents the facility's total vehicle production capacity, rather than dedicated EV capacity.

The Hansalpur operation accounted for nearly half of Maruti Suzuki's overall vehicle exports during FY2025-26, underlining its importance beyond electric vehicles alone.

e Vitara Drives Maruti Suzuki's Global EV Ambitions

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara represents a major shift in Maruti Suzuki's product and export strategy.

Unlike the company's traditional focus on affordable petrol and CNG vehicles for the domestic market, the e Vitara has been positioned as a globally competitive electric SUV.

The same facility also manufactures the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, the related electric SUV developed under the Suzuki–Toyota partnership. However, the company's reported 50,000-unit export milestone is centred on Maruti Suzuki's own EV exports, and should not automatically be interpreted as including Toyota-badged vehicles.

Export Success Contrasts With Domestic EV Performance

While Maruti Suzuki has achieved considerable export scale, the e Vitara has yet to replicate that success in India's domestic electric passenger vehicle market.

The e Vitara's cumulative domestic sales remained below 12,000 units as of October 29, 2026. The publication also reported approximately 1,100 Maruti Suzuki EV sales in September, compared with around 14,700 electric cars sold by Tata Motors during the same month.

These figures underline the differences between Maruti Suzuki's international and domestic EV operations, although the cumulative export and domestic sales figures cover different periods and should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison.

The company's global manufacturing strategy is therefore playing a crucial role in establishing volumes for its first electric vehicle.

What This Means for India's EV Manufacturing Industry

Maruti Suzuki's export achievement has significance beyond the company's individual performance.

1. India as a global EV production base: The e Vitara demonstrates that India can serve as a manufacturing hub for electric passenger vehicles intended for developed international markets.

2. Greater manufacturing scale: International shipments provide additional production volumes that can help improve manufacturing efficiency and capacity utilisation.

3. Opportunities for component suppliers: Higher EV production could support demand for locally manufactured electrical components, vehicle electronics and other EV-related systems, subject to localisation levels.

4. Reduced dependence on domestic EV adoption: A diversified export strategy allows Maruti Suzuki to build EV volumes even while its domestic electric vehicle portfolio is still developing.

5. Stronger global role for Suzuki's Indian operations: With the e Vitara manufactured in Gujarat for international markets, India has become central to Suzuki's first global battery-electric vehicle programme.

Maruti Suzuki surpasses 50,000 EV exports, accounting for nearly 93% of India's electric passenger vehicle exports in H1 FY2027.

Auto Punditz Take

Maruti Suzuki's 50,000-unit EV export milestone marks an important achievement for the Indian automotive manufacturing industry.

The most significant number, however, is its nearly 93% share of India's electric passenger vehicle exports in H1 FY2027. This illustrates how Maruti Suzuki has rapidly established a leading position in a segment where it was previously absent.

The e Vitara's international rollout also highlights an interesting contrast: while competing manufacturers have largely built their electric passenger vehicle businesses around Indian demand, Maruti Suzuki is using global markets to establish production scale.

Nevertheless, export leadership does not automatically translate into domestic EV leadership. The company's next challenge will be to strengthen e Vitara sales in India, expand customer acceptance and establish a competitive position against existing electric SUV manufacturers.

For India's automotive industry, the achievement is another indicator that the country is evolving from a conventional passenger vehicle export base into a manufacturing location for globally marketed electric vehicles.
