May 2025 Car Sales – Snapshot

Around 3.5 Lakh passenger cars were sold in the Indian market in May 2025. Vehicle Dispatches was flat over May last year and dropped by 1.1% compared to April 2025.

May 2025 was a stressful month as the sales trend was dull and the industry could record a flat sales volume over the last year and a drop in dispatches over the previous month. The dealer stock levels remain high, and the manufacturers are passing on increased discounts to improve the demand. The India-Pakistan conflict following Operation Sindoor affected sales majorly in the Northern part of the country. Incessant rains across the nation also impacted business in the last week of May 2025.

  • Maruti reported total sales of 1,35,962 units dispatches last month, which was -5.6% vs last year's same month and -2% vs last month. The Market Share drop was the highest, from 41.3% in May'24 to 38.9% in May'25.

  • Mahindra retains its second spot and has also recorded one of the highest YoY growth in May'25. M&M has gained tremendous acceptance of Roxx in Tier-1 markets, and the overall popularity of its SUVs has made it a strong No.2 now.

  • Hyundai has scaled up to the No.3 rank in May 2025, ousting Tata from the spot. Both Hyundai and Tata have lost Market Share in May 2025, and the gain is primarily from Mahindra.

  • Tata has been struggling to protect its volumes across segments, and even EV volumes have been tapering down. Tata has been preparing itself to regain lost base, and Harrier EV specs look promising as of now.
