JSW MG Motor India is preparing to take a significant step in the country’s electrification journey by unveiling its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) on July 16, 2026. While the company has only confirmed that a “new energy vehicle” will debut on the date, industry reports strongly suggest that the model will be the India-spec version of the Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV, which has already been spotted testing on Indian roads and whose design patent was recently filed in India.
The launch will mark MG’s entry into a segment that currently has no mainstream mass-market competitor in India, positioning the company as an early mover in plug-in hybrid SUVs.
Likely Based On Wuling Starlight 560
Internally codenamed 520, the upcoming SUV is expected to be offered in both plug-in hybrid and fully electric forms globally. For India, the PHEV version is likely to arrive first as MG evaluates the market’s response to electrified SUVs that eliminate range anxiety while offering meaningful electric-only driving capability.
Although the final India name remains under wraps, the SUV will almost certainly receive a unique MG identity rather than retaining the Wuling branding.

Powertrain: 100+ KM Electric Range, 1,000 KM+ Combined Range
Internationally, the Indonesia-spec model pairs a:
1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine
20.5 kWh battery pack
Front-mounted electric motor
The combined system produces approximately 195 hp and 230 Nm of torque.
One of the biggest highlights is its ability to travel around 125 km on electric power alone (market-dependent test cycle), while delivering a combined driving range exceeding 1,000 km with both battery and fuel tank fully utilised.
Such figures would make it one of the longest-range passenger SUVs available in India.
Dimensions And Practicality
The SUV measures:
Length: 4,745 mm
Width: 1,850 mm
Height: 1,755 mm
Wheelbase: 2,810 mm
Its upright proportions and generous wheelbase suggest a spacious cabin with three rows of seating, allowing accommodation for up to seven occupants.
Premium Interior With Connected Technology
The international model features a modern minimalist cabin with:
12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster
Leatherette upholstery
Multi-function steering wheel
Connected car technology
Multiple USB charging ports
Automatic climate control
MG is also expected to localise feature content for India and could add ADAS functions, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof and wireless smartphone connectivity depending on variant positioning.
Positioned Between Hybrids And EVs
Unlike conventional strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids can be charged externally and are capable of completing most daily commutes purely on electric power.
For buyers travelling longer distances, the petrol engine automatically takes over, removing charging anxiety while significantly reducing fuel consumption.
This makes PHEVs particularly attractive in markets like India, where charging infrastructure continues to expand but remains uneven across regions.
Expected Rivals
The upcoming MG SUV is expected to compete with premium three-row SUVs such as:
Mahindra XUV 7XO
Tata Safari
Hyundai Alcazar
Jeep Meridian
However, it will differentiate itself by becoming one of the very few plug-in hybrid SUVs in the segment, offering both electric commuting capability and long-distance touring without dependence on public charging.
Auto Punditz Thoughts
JSW MG Motor has steadily built its reputation in India through electric vehicles such as the Comet EV, ZS EV and Windsor EV. Introducing a plug-in hybrid SUV represents the next logical step in broadening its electrified portfolio.
If MG manages aggressive localisation and competitive pricing, this upcoming SUV could carve out an entirely new category between traditional ICE SUVs and fully electric models. With more than 1,000 km of claimed combined range, practical seven-seat packaging and the flexibility of both petrol and electric propulsion, the July 16 debut could become one of the most significant product announcements of 2026.
As India’s SUV market continues shifting toward electrification, MG appears ready to lead another transition—this time with plug-in hybrid technology.
