Vehicle Registration Statistics – September 2020

Federation of Automobile Dealers Association has released September’20 Vehicle Registration Data today. We appreciate FADA’s pro-activeness in accessing vehicle registration data and publishing it accordingly.

Vehicle Registration data is a much relevant and stronger metric in terms of assessing the Industry’s Performance as it highlights the actual sale (from dealer to customer). We explain how – While the passenger vehicle industry had projected a YoY growth of 31.4%; the registrations have actually increased by only 9.8%. This indicates that the OEMs have clearly pushed stocks/vehicles to the dealerships anticipating better demand in the upcoming festive season.

Category wise Vehicle Registration / Retail Data –

  1. Vehicle Registrations in September 2020 continued to grow by 11.45% on MoM basis (v/s Aug’20) but falls by -10.24% on YoY basis (v/s Sep’19).

  2. Tractors & Passenger vehicles were the categories which showed YoY growth in September 2020. While tractors grew an impressive 80.4% in Sep’20 v/s Sep’19; PVs YoY growth was 9,8%. Tractor sales in rural India continues its positive run as Kharif sowing witnessed record progress of area covered till date.

  3. With social distancing as the new normal, the Government’s push to open urban areas and easing of vehicle financing, entry level passenger vehicles saw good demand. Do note that Entry Hatchback, Compact Hatchback & Premium Hatchback segments had registered the highest growth in Sep’20 (Source).

  4. Three Wheelers recorded the steepest YoY degrowth of -58.9%. With cities under incessant lockdown; the sale of three wheelers have impacted heavily and the sales fall seems inevitable now.

  5. Even CVs too registered >30% YoY degrowth. The segment has taken a huge beating in Covid19 era and both trucks/buses sales have come down drastically.

  6. Dealer Inventory for both 2W and PV are at highest levels in anticipation of a good festive season. Any further increase in inventory coupled with festival dampener will have a catastrophic impact on the health of auto dealerships.

Note:

  1. The above numbers do not have figures from AP, MP, LD & TS as all these States/UT’s are not yet on Vahan 4.

  2. Vehicle Registration Data has been collated as on 06.10.20 and in collaboration with Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India and has been gathered from 1,254 out of 1,461 RTOs.
