Volkswagen has officially unveiled the all-new ID. Tiguan electric SUV, featuring two battery options, three powertrain configurations, an advanced three-screen cockpit and a host of new technologies. The electric SUV will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 globally, with its European market launch scheduled for early 2027.

German automotive giant Volkswagen has taken a major step in its electric mobility strategy with the world premiere of the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan on October 9, 2026. The new electric SUV combines the familiarity of Volkswagen's globally successful Tiguan nameplate with the company's latest electric vehicle technology.

Built on Volkswagen's upgraded MEB+ electric vehicle architecture, the ID. Tiguan offers a claimed driving range of up to 600 km (WLTP), power outputs of up to 299 PS and several improvements in cabin quality, practicality and driving assistance. The new ID. Tiguan will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5, which together have achieved production volumes exceeding 950,000 units. However, the conventional Tiguan will continue to be sold alongside the electric SUV with petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains in applicable markets.

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Battery, Motor and Driving Range

The ID. Tiguan will be available with three powertrain configurations, catering to buyers looking for an everyday electric family SUV as well as those seeking stronger performance and all-wheel-drive capability.

Volkswagen claims that the ID. Tiguan will deliver a maximum WLTP-certified range of up to 600 km, depending on the battery and powertrain configuration. The flagship 4MOTION version combines all-wheel-drive traction with 299 PS of power, positioning it as the performance-oriented option within the range. The SUV also offers substantial towing capability, with a maximum capacity of 1,800 kg for the 58 kWh version and 2,000 kg for the 77 kWh variants. The manufacturer has not detailed the complete charging performance figures in its world-premiere announcement.

New Exterior Design: A More Premium SUV Identity

Volkswagen has introduced its new Pure Positive design language on the ID. Tiguan, replacing the softer crossover styling of the ID.4 and ID.5 with a more substantial SUV appearance. The exterior incorporates a more upright stance, precisely sculpted surfaces and stronger visual proportions. Volkswagen says the objective was to give the ID. Tiguan the road presence and perceived quality of a vehicle from a higher segment.

Another notable change is the return of conventional pull-type exterior door handles, reflecting the company's emphasis on familiar and practical design solutions. The ID. Tiguan will be offered in four equipment grades: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line.

Completely Redesigned Interior With Three Displays

One of the biggest improvements in the new ID. Tiguan is its redesigned interior.

Volkswagen has focused on improving perceived quality, ergonomics and ease of use, addressing some of the criticism directed at earlier ID-series vehicles.

The new dashboard features three displays:

Digital Cockpit

10 inches

Central infotainment

15 inches

Co-driver display

12 inches

Passenger entertainment and information

The optional 12-inch passenger display is a first for a European Volkswagen model. It incorporates a privacy function that prevents the driver from viewing the passenger's screen content, while the passenger can use compatible Bluetooth headphones for audio.

Physical Buttons Make a Comeback

In a significant change to the company's interior design philosophy, Volkswagen has reintroduced physical controls for several commonly used functions. These include steering-wheel buttons, climate-control switches and an accessible centre-console controller for adjusting audio volume and changing tracks. The move should make frequently used functions easier to operate without navigating multiple touchscreen menus.

Volkswagen Introduces Retro Display Themes

An interesting addition is the new Retro display function, which recreates the instrument-cluster appearance of the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf. The central infotainment display also offers visual themes inspired by six historic Volkswagen vehicles, including the original Golf, Golf II Country, Golf IV, first-generation Tiguan, Race Touareg and Beetle. This feature combines Volkswagen's automotive heritage with the digital capabilities of its latest electric platform.

Premium Comfort and Convenience Features

The ID. Tiguan introduces a comprehensive range of convenience and comfort equipment, including:

  • Electrically adjustable front seats with available massage, memory and ventilation functions

  • Optional 480-watt Harman Kardon premium sound system

  • Optional panoramic sunroof

  • Two available Qi2-compatible wireless smartphone charging points

  • Digital Key functionality using a compatible smartphone

  • Vehicle-to-load capability for powering external electrical equipment

The Digital Key can also be shared with other users through Volkswagen's application, allowing compatible smartphones to unlock and start the vehicle. The vehicle-to-load feature uses a dedicated adapter connected to the charging port, enabling owners to power compatible external devices. These premium features are equipment- and market-dependent rather than standard across every variant.

Advanced Driver Assistance and One-Pedal Driving

Volkswagen has equipped the ID. Tiguan with new driver assistance technologies aimed at improving convenience and safety. One-pedal driving is included as standard, allowing drivers to manage significant vehicle deceleration through the accelerator pedal. The optional Connected Travel Assist system introduces additional capabilities, including assisted lane changes on motorways and traffic-light recognition that can automatically bring the vehicle to a stop at red signals under supported conditions.

Availability and functionality will depend on local regulations, equipment and operating conditions. Drivers must remain attentive and responsible for controlling the vehicle.

Practicality: 534-Litre Boot and Additional Frunk

Practicality remains an important focus for Volkswagen's latest electric SUV.

The ID. Tiguan offers accommodation for five occupants and a rear luggage compartment with a capacity of up to 534 litres. An additional 32-litre front trunk provides convenient storage for smaller items, including charging accessories. The combination of cabin space, luggage capacity and towing capability makes the ID. Tiguan suitable for family usage and longer journeys.

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Price and Launch Timeline

Volkswagen has confirmed that pre-sales for the ID. Tiguan will begin in Germany and several other European markets on October 13, 2026. The starting price in Germany has been announced at €42,695, with the European market rollout scheduled for early 2027. The electric SUV will be manufactured in Emden, Germany, while the conventional Tiguan continues to be produced in Wolfsburg.

Will the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Launch in India?

Volkswagen has not announced an Indian launch timeline or pricing for the ID. Tiguan.

If introduced in India, the model would enter an increasingly competitive premium electric SUV segment, where models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7 are relevant reference points. However, its positioning, pricing and competitors in India would depend on Volkswagen's localisation strategy, import arrangements and final market specifications. Any India launch remains speculative until an official announcement.

Why the ID. Tiguan Is Important for Volkswagen

The ID. Tiguan represents more than a replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5. It signals a change in Volkswagen's broader electric vehicle strategy. Rather than relying exclusively on numerical ID-series nameplates, Volkswagen is increasingly using established model identities for its electric vehicles.

The ID. Polo, ID. Cross and now ID. Tiguan reflect this direction. The Tiguan nameplate carries considerable global recognition, with more than 8.3 million units produced over its lifetime. By introducing an electric SUV under this established name, Volkswagen aims to make the transition to electric mobility more familiar for existing customers.

The decision to continue offering conventional Tiguan variants also reflects a flexible approach, allowing buyers to select between combustion, hybrid and fully electric powertrains according to their requirements.

Auto Punditz Take: A More Customer-Focused Electric SUV

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan appears to be a meaningful evolution of the brand's electric SUV offering, particularly in terms of usability, interior quality and practicality. The return of physical buttons, the introduction of a passenger display and the addition of a front storage compartment demonstrate that Volkswagen is responding to customer feedback rather than focusing solely on technology for its own sake.

The claimed 600 km WLTP range and availability of a 299 PS all-wheel-drive variant should make the ID. Tiguan competitive in Europe's electric SUV segment. However, its real-world efficiency, charging performance and pricing across different variants will be important factors in determining its market success.

For Indian buyers, the ID. Tiguan would be an interesting addition to the premium electric SUV market, but its prospects would depend heavily on pricing and Volkswagen's willingness to introduce the model locally. The bigger story is Volkswagen's decision to combine its most recognisable SUV nameplate with its next generation of electric vehicle technology. The ID. Tiguan could help the company make electric SUVs more accessible and appealing to its existing global customer base.
