BYD’s Denza Z9 GT Set for India Launch by End-2026; 1,156hp Electric Shooting Brake Could Cost ₹1.2–1.5 Crore
BYD is preparing to significantly expand its presence at the premium end of the Indian electric vehicle market with the introduction of its luxury sub-brand Denza. The brand is expected to enter India by the end of 2026, and one of the headline products will be the Denza Z9 GT, a high-performance electric shooting brake producing a staggering 1,156hp.
The Z9 GT will be joined by the Denza D9 luxury electric MPV, giving the brand two very different flagship products at launch. Both models are expected to arrive in India as completely built-up units (CBUs), with Denza positioned above BYD's existing passenger vehicle range.

1,156hp from three electric motors
The India-spec Z9 GT is expected to be offered as a fully electric model rather than the plug-in hybrid version available in some international markets. Its performance figures immediately place it among the most powerful production EVs expected to be sold in India.
The electric drivetrain employs three motors — one at the front and two at the rear — producing a combined 1,156hp. Autocar India reports that this setup enables a 0-100km/h sprint in just 2.7 seconds, while top speed stands at 270km/h. That makes the Z9 GT considerably more than a luxury grand tourer. In outright acceleration, it ventures into supercar territory.
122.5kWh battery with around 600km WLTP range
Powering the India-bound Z9 GT is expected to be a 122.5kWh battery pack, with a claimed combined WLTP range of approximately 600km. The more significant technological highlight, however, could be charging performance.
Denza's latest version supports the company's ultra-high-power Flash Charging architecture, which is claimed to operate at up to 1,500kW. Under suitable charging conditions, the battery can reportedly move from 10 percent to 97 percent in about nine minutes. Infrastructure capable of delivering such charging speeds remains extremely limited, however, so Indian owners are unlikely to experience the vehicle's maximum theoretical charging performance immediately.
Rear-wheel steering and crab-walk capability
The Z9 GT also demonstrates some of BYD's latest chassis technology. It features rear-wheel steering and can perform a sideways crab-walk manoeuvre, allowing the wheels to steer in a manner that helps the large vehicle manoeuvre in tight spaces.
Denza's official China specifications for existing Z9 GT derivatives also list a turning radius of around 4.62 metres, despite the car measuring more than five metres long. The EV additionally uses a cell-to-body architecture, integrating the battery more closely with the vehicle structure.
A very large performance GT
The Z9 GT is not a compact sports car. Existing international versions measure roughly 5.18 metres long and 1.99 metres wide, with a 3,125mm wheelbase, making it substantially larger than many conventional luxury sedans. Its proportions give it a distinctive shooting-brake silhouette that combines a low roofline with the practicality of a large rear hatch. The size and battery pack also mean substantial weight, with the India-bound performance version reportedly weighing close to 2.9 tonnes.
Luxury-focused cabin with five displays
Inside, Denza has adopted a technology-heavy approach. The dashboard architecture incorporates as many as five displays, including screens linked to camera-based exterior mirrors on some versions. Passenger comfort is equally important. The four outer seats are expected to offer features such as:

Massage functions
Adjustable under-thigh support
Reclining rear seats
International versions also offer premium leather upholstery, wireless charging and high-end audio systems. Denza's European product information lists features including massage and ventilated seating, a heated/cooled storage compartment and a Devialet audio system.
Level 2+ ADAS expected
The Z9 GT is also expected to arrive with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including Level 2+ ADAS. The combination of high-performance electric hardware, active chassis systems, rear-wheel steering and advanced driver assistance suggests Denza intends to use the Z9 GT primarily as a technology showcase for the brand.
Expected India price: ₹1.2 crore to ₹1.5 crore
The biggest challenge will be positioning. Current expectations place the Denza Z9 GT at approximately ₹1.2 crore-₹1.5 crore, before options, when it reaches India. At that price, Denza will move far beyond BYD's existing positioning in India and into territory occupied by established European luxury brands.
The Porsche Taycan is likely to be its most obvious conceptual rival, although the Z9 GT takes a different approach by combining extraordinary output with a larger, more practical shooting-brake body.
Denza D9 will launch alongside it
The Z9 GT will not arrive alone. Denza is also preparing the D9 electric luxury MPV for India. The expected India version will use a front-wheel-drive electric setup producing around 313hp and 360Nm, paired with a 103kWh battery. Its claimed WLTP range is approximately 520km, while DC charging capability is rated at up to 200kW. Expected pricing of roughly ₹80 lakh would put the D9 against luxury MPVs including the MG M9 and, at the upper end, the Toyota Vellfire.
Denza to get separate dealerships in India
Another important development is that Denza is expected to operate through dedicated dealerships rather than being sold directly alongside BYD models. The initial network is likely to focus on major luxury-car markets, with Delhi-NCR and Mumbai reportedly among the first locations being considered. That strategy makes sense because BYD appears keen to establish Denza as a distinctly more premium brand rather than merely another model line.
Why Denza matters for BYD India
Until now, BYD's India strategy has primarily revolved around premium EVs positioned below traditional European luxury brands. Denza changes that equation. The brand could allow BYD to participate directly in the ₹80 lakh-plus premium EV market, without pushing the core BYD badge too far upmarket. The Z9 GT, in particular, is unlikely to become a volume product. Instead, its role could be to demonstrate what BYD's electric architecture, battery technology and chassis systems are capable of.
For a relatively new luxury name in India, that halo effect may be more important than immediate sales volumes.
Auto Punditz Take
The Denza Z9 GT could become one of the most technically ambitious EVs offered in India if the reported specifications carry over to the production model. A 1,156hp tri-motor drivetrain, 2.7-second 0-100km/h time, 600km WLTP range, rear-wheel steering and ultra-fast charging create an impressive specification sheet.
But Denza's bigger challenge won't necessarily be engineering. At an expected ₹1.2-1.5 crore, buyers will compare it with brands carrying decades of luxury and performance heritage. Establishing brand desirability, resale confidence, after-sales support and a premium retail experience will therefore be just as important as headline horsepower.
The arrival of the Z9 GT and D9 nevertheless signals an important next step for BYD in India: moving from premium EV challenger to a player willing to compete directly in the luxury segment.
