Auto Punditz Take
September 2026 presented a mixed picture for the hybrid passenger vehicle segment.
The Toyota Hycross continued to lead the rankings, but its 40% annual decline significantly affected the overall performance. Meanwhile, the Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara demonstrated relatively stronger momentum, with the latter registering an impressive 34% growth.
Toyota's nearly 71% share highlights its dominance in the reported hybrid dispatch mix. However, the entry of additional hybrid nameplates into the rankings could gradually diversify volumes across manufacturers.
The biggest takeaway is that the 9% annual decline should not be interpreted as a uniform slowdown across all hybrid models. Several nameplates reported positive growth, but this was outweighed by sharp reductions in a few high-volume models.
Going forward, the key indicators to watch will be whether Hycross volumes recover, whether the Grand Vitara sustains its growth, and how newer hybrid entries perform over subsequent months.
