June 2024 — Mahindra Car Sales Figures - YoY Change
Marazzo
The most notable product worth talking about in the Mahindra lineup is the Marazzo. It brought a game-changing recipe:
A body-on-frame construction for tough, go-anywhere vibe
A flat floor in rear seats and no transmission tunnel (unlike other body-on-frame vehicles) offer superior ingress and egress (for a BOF vehicle)
A front-wheel drivetrain for better efficiency
What’s not to like here? Even the pricing was good and it did quite well until the Covid. Not exceedingly well, but enough to justify continuing production. Moreover, it offered something that was rugged like the Innova Crysta but comfy like the Ertiga. The pricing, cabin space and performance too fell smack in the middle of the Ertiga and Innova. It technically had everything it needed to make a splash. And now, reports suggest that it’ll go out of production very soon. In fact, Mahindra have removed it from their website, confirming that the reports are indeed accurate.
Perhaps the success of Thar and the failure of Marazzo should tell them that having a product name ending ‘O’ doesn’t guarantee success in the Indian market. Neither does practicality, as these two Mahindra products sit on the opposite ends of that scale.
Right now, the Carens carries the responsibility to bridge the gap between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta/Hycross. So far, it’s doing that job admirably.
XUV 3XO Pricing
On the flip side, their strategy to price the lower variants of their products aggressively has worked quite well for them in recent years. The Thar, Scorpio N, XUV700 and now the XUV3XO, all went on sale with an unreal starting price. Three of these ended up becoming massive success stories in their respective segments. So, unless Mahindra stretch the 3XO’s pricing, we expect it to also keep growing in the B2 SUV segment and grab some market share from the overpriced, under-equipped Nexon, which also happens to have the worst variant-feature distribution in its segment.
XUV 700 Price Drop
Speaking of product pricing, the XUV700 also recently received a massive price drop. The top AX7 variant combinations of the 700 got a big price drop of about Rs. 2.0 lakh. Is this a hint towards something more menacing to come in the future? Because, this kind of a price correction is not common.

Top Gainers (YoY % Change)
Among the top gainers, the Thar deserves some serious credit as it not only destroyed the Jimny but is also getting ready to spawn a 5-door version. Although, the Thar alone doesn’t deserve all the credit for that. Maruti’s pricing and positioning of the Jimny also helped the Thar a fair bit.
But the final nail in the coffin for the Jimny were the massive discounts without any relief to the people who showed faith in Maruti and paid top dollar to become early adopters of the Jimny. We highlighted last month (in June 2024) that Maruti had brought back the discounts on the Jimny in 6-figures (Rs. 1.5 lakh on Alpha). Now, the official discounts have doubled to Rs. 3.0 lakh. In fact, you should have no trouble stretching the discounts up to Rs. 3.5 lakh. And, if you are good at haggling with a dealer having excess stock, you may even be able to get up to Rs. 4.0 lakh discounts.
There’s no turning back from something that has to sell at nearly 25% discount from the listed price just to achieve a 3-digit monthly sales figures.
