Yamaha appears to be preparing its next big move in India’s premium scooter space. The company has reportedly patented the design of the Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech MAX in India, hinting that the maxi-scooter could be under evaluation for our market. If launched, the NMAX 155 Tech MAX would sit above the Aerox 155 and could become Yamaha’s most feature-packed scooter offering in India.
The development is important because Yamaha already sells the Aerox 155 in India, which has built a niche following among enthusiasts looking for motorcycle-like performance in a scooter format. However, the NMAX 155 takes a different approach. While the Aerox is sporty and aggressive, the NMAX is more of a proper maxi-scooter with a larger body, better wind protection, more comfort-oriented ergonomics and a richer feature list.

What Is Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech MAX?
The Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech MAX is the more premium version of the NMAX 155 sold in global markets. In some international markets, a similar version is also referred to as the NMAX Turbo. It uses Yamaha’s familiar 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation, the same basic engine family that powers the Aerox 155 and R15 range.
In the NMAX 155 Tech MAX, the engine produces around 15 hp and 14 Nm, which puts it close to the Aerox 155 in terms of output. However, the difference lies in the scooter’s positioning and technology package. The NMAX is designed to offer a more premium, practical and comfortable maxi-scooter experience.
More Features Than Aerox 155
The biggest talking point is the feature list. The NMAX 155 Tech MAX gets a more advanced setup than the India-spec Aerox 155. Highlights include a 4.2-inch colour TFT display, integrated Garmin navigation, smartphone connectivity, Smart Key, USB-C charging, LED lighting and a dual-display dashboard layout in select markets.
It also gets Yamaha’s YECVT, or Yamaha Electric Continuously Variable Transmission. This system allows two selectable riding modes — Sport and Town. Sport mode is tuned for sharper acceleration and stronger engine braking, while Town mode focuses on smoother performance and better efficiency. There is also a Downshift function, which can be activated through a switch or throttle input to deliver stronger response, similar to a quick downshift in a conventional gearbox.
For Indian buyers, this could make the NMAX 155 Tech MAX feel more premium and tech-focused than the Aerox 155.
Comfort-Focused Maxi-Scooter Design
Unlike many conventional scooters in India, the NMAX 155 Tech MAX is not a flat-floor scooter. Like the Aerox, it uses a central spine, which houses the fuel tank and contributes to chassis rigidity. This means it will not offer the typical step-through practicality of a family scooter, but it should provide a more stable and planted riding experience.
The NMAX gets 13-inch alloy wheels, compared to the Aerox’s 14-inch wheels. It also has a lower seat height of around 770 mm, making it more accessible for a wider set of riders. The fuel tank capacity is around 7.1 litres, while kerb weight is close to 135 kg.
Another major advantage is its comfort-oriented suspension setup. The NMAX uses telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers, with gas-charged rear units in global versions. This could help it offer a more mature ride quality than the sportier Aerox 155.
Braking And Safety
The NMAX 155 Tech MAX is also expected to be better equipped on the braking front. While the Aerox 155 sold in India gets a front disc and rear drum setup, the global-spec NMAX comes with disc brakes at both ends. It is also available with dual-channel ABS in international markets.
If Yamaha brings this setup to India, the NMAX could have a clear equipment advantage over the Aerox. However, Yamaha may also choose to make some changes to keep pricing competitive.
India Launch Possibility
The design patent does not guarantee an immediate launch, but it is a strong indication that Yamaha is studying the model for India. Reports suggest that Yamaha is actively working on bringing the NMAX 155 to the Indian market by 2027.
The premium scooter space in India is still small, but it is slowly evolving. Yamaha’s Aerox 155 has already shown that there is a dedicated audience for performance scooters. The NMAX 155 Tech MAX could expand that audience by targeting riders who want Aerox-like performance but with better comfort, more features and a proper maxi-scooter stance.
Expected Positioning And Price
If launched, the Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech MAX will likely be positioned above the Aerox 155. The Aerox 155 currently sits in the premium scooter segment and already commands a higher price than most 125cc scooters in India. Given the NMAX’s added features, dual-disc braking hardware, TFT display, navigation support and more premium bodywork, Yamaha could price it at a noticeable premium.
A realistic expectation would be a price tag above the Aerox 155, possibly around the ₹1.60 lakh to ₹1.75 lakh ex-showroom range, depending on the final India-spec equipment.
Auto Punditz Take
The Yamaha NMAX 155 Tech MAX could be a very interesting addition to India’s scooter market. It may not appeal to traditional scooter buyers who want flat-floor practicality, but it can attract urban riders looking for a premium, powerful and feature-rich two-wheeler.
For Yamaha, the NMAX 155 Tech MAX can serve as a natural extension of the Aerox 155 strategy. The Aerox is youthful and sporty, while the NMAX is more mature and comfort-focused. If Yamaha manages to price it sensibly, the NMAX could become one of the most desirable premium scooters in India.
The big question is whether Yamaha will bring the full Tech MAX package or a slightly toned-down India-spec version. Either way, the design patent suggests that Yamaha’s premium scooter portfolio in India may soon get a lot more exciting.
