Hero, TVS, Bajaj and Royal Enfield Put India Among the World's Most Influential Two-Wheeler Nations

The global two-wheeler industry continues to be dominated by Asian manufacturers, with Japanese, Indian and Chinese brands accounting for the overwhelming majority of motorcycle and scooter sales worldwide. A review of 2025 sales trends reveals that while Honda remains comfortably ahead of the competition, Indian manufacturers are increasingly shaping the future of global mobility.

The latest global ranking of two-wheeler brands places Honda at the top with an estimated 20.2 million units sold, followed by India's Hero MotoCorp at 5.9 million units. Yamaha, Yadea, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto complete the top six positions.

More importantly, four Indian brands—Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto and Royal Enfield—feature among the world's ten largest two-wheeler manufacturers, highlighting India's growing importance not just as a consumption market but also as a manufacturing and export hub.

Honda Continues to Operate in a League of Its Own

With more than 20 million units sold annually, Honda remains the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by a significant margin. The Japanese giant's strength lies in its unmatched global footprint, ranging from commuter motorcycles in India and Southeast Asia to premium motorcycles in Europe and North America.

Honda's sales volume alone is larger than the combined annual sales of several brands ranked below it, underlining the scale advantage the company enjoys in procurement, manufacturing and distribution.

The Activa scooter and Shine motorcycle continue to be among the biggest contributors to Honda's global volume.

Hero MotoCorp Holds Firm as the World's No. 2

Hero MotoCorp maintained its position as the second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer globally with approximately 5.9 million units sold.

While the company remains heavily dependent on the Indian market, it has steadily expanded its international footprint across Latin America, Africa and South Asia. Hero's Splendor remains one of the world's highest-selling motorcycles, helping the company sustain leadership in the commuter segment.

The company's growing premium portfolio, including the Xtreme range and partnership with Harley-Davidson, is expected to further strengthen its market position in coming years.

TVS and Bajaj Strengthen India's Global Influence

TVS Motor secured fifth position globally with approximately 3.7 million units sold. The company has emerged as one of India's fastest-growing exporters while also gaining traction in the premium and electric mobility segments.

Bajaj Auto ranked sixth with around 3.3 million units. Unlike many rivals, Bajaj derives a significant portion of its volumes from exports, making it one of the most internationally diversified Indian automotive manufacturers.

Its Pulsar, Platina and Boxer platforms continue to perform strongly across Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Royal Enfield's Premium Strategy Delivers Results

Royal Enfield crossed the one-million-unit sales milestone and entered the global top ten for the first time.

Unlike mass-market brands focused on entry-level commuters, Royal Enfield has built its success around the mid-size motorcycle segment. Models such as the Classic 350, Hunter 350, Bullet 350 and Himalayan have transformed the company into a global lifestyle motorcycle brand.

The achievement demonstrates that premium motorcycles can also deliver significant volume when supported by strong brand identity and global distribution.

China's Growing Presence Signals the EV Future

China has the highest number of brands represented in the Top 20 ranking, including Yadea, Haojue, Zongshen, Loncin, Niu Technologies and CFMoto.

Several of these manufacturers have benefited from the rapid adoption of electric two-wheelers in China and Europe. Yadea and Niu, in particular, have become major players in urban electric mobility.

Their growing scale indicates that the next major battleground for the industry may not be conventional motorcycles but electric scooters and connected mobility solutions.

Although China has the highest number of brands in the ranking, Indian manufacturers collectively account for approximately 14 million annual sales, making India one of the most influential two-wheeler-producing nations in the world.

Why India Matters More Than Ever

India is already the world's largest two-wheeler market by volume. However, the country is now becoming equally important as a global production and export base.

Several factors are driving this transformation:

  • Large domestic demand supporting economies of scale

  • Competitive manufacturing costs

  • Strong engineering and product-development capabilities

  • Expanding export networks

  • Rapid adoption of electric mobility

  • Increasing premiumisation of motorcycles

With Hero, TVS, Bajaj and Royal Enfield all investing aggressively in exports and new technologies, India's role in the global two-wheeler ecosystem is expected to grow substantially over the next decade.

Auto Punditz Take

The 2025 global two-wheeler rankings highlight two defining trends. First, Honda remains the industry's undisputed leader, operating at a scale that few manufacturers can match. Second, India has firmly established itself as the world's most important growth market and one of the strongest manufacturing hubs for two-wheelers.

While Japanese brands continue to dominate the top positions, Indian manufacturers are rapidly closing the gap through scale, exports and innovation. Meanwhile, Chinese companies are leveraging electric mobility to build global relevance.

The future of the two-wheeler industry is likely to be shaped by a three-way battle between Japanese engineering excellence, Indian manufacturing scale and Chinese EV leadership—and that competition is only just beginning.
